‘Where are the Workers?’ Business roundtables to examine labor upheaval

Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is inviting local employers to participate in two roundtable discussions on hiring and talent retention challenges and share how they’re responding.

The “Where Are the Workers?” virtual roundtables are set for 1:30 to 3 p.m. on March 10 (register here) and 1 to 2:30 p.m. on March 11 (register here).

“’Where Are the Workers?’ is an important project that will help the Mahoning Valley overcome the challenges in the labor market and put us on a course that will make our area a better place for all,” said Shari Harrell, foundation president.

The foundation is seeking “businesses of all stripes” to participate, according to a news release.

After the discussions, representatives from Team NEO and Fund for Our Economic Future may reach out to participants to share their stories, which can be either attributed to the business or kept anonymous. The results of the research are expected to be published at a later date.

“Our goal is to create an environment for candid conversations that produce actionable insights for employers and practitioners in Northeast Ohio and beyond. A documentarian for the project will take notes at these roundtables, which will inform the end product,” said Bethia Burke, Fund for Our Economic Future president.

Mahoning County health department seeking partners to target health disparities

Mahoning County Public Health is seeking proposals from interested agencies to hire two to four community health workers who will provide community-based care coordination.

Mahoning Valley Pathways HUB, a division of MCPH, was recently awarded renewal funds for this year to expand the Pathways Community HUB, which uses an evidence-based model to reduce health disparities and address social determinants of health.

An informational session is set for 1 p.m. Friday. To register and receive the Zoom link, email [email protected]. All proposal responses must be submitted to MCPH by 11:59 p.m. March 4.

According to Mahoning County’s Community Health Assessment, in 2019, 15% of Mahoning County residents said they needed assistance with transportation; 27% reported living two or more miles away from healthy foods; 34% said they hadn’t exercised in the past week; and 35% of the population reported being overweight.

“These are all factors that contribute to chronic conditions and can have a negative impact on families,” reads a news release. “Mahoning Valley Pathways HUB was implemented in early 2016 to address health disparities in infant mortality and other chronic health conditions.”

Pathways has served more than 1,300 clients to date, according to the release.
