YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber recently was awarded for its effort on the Ultium Cells project.
Shea MacMillan, the regional chamber’s director of Economic Development Projects, attended the 2021 Mid-America Economic Development Council’s Competitiveness Conference in Chicago last week to accept the Economic Impact Deal of the Year Award (Large Division) for the project.
The award recognizes a project’s having significant and measurable impact on a city, county and region that already has broken ground and is in the initial phase of implementation (from January 2020 to July 2021). The impact could include capital investment, jobs, supplier network, economic impact or new partnership initiatives that positively improved the community, a news release states.
The regional chamber’s Economic Development staff supported Ultium Cells’ site selection process and assisted in navigating opportunities and challenges related to utility, workforce and transportation needs. The $2.3 billion Ultium Cells lithium-ion battery plant in Lordstown will result in the creation of 1,100 jobs, the release states.
“A project of this magnitude requires endless collaboration and is one that really brings a community together. The focus we are seeing from our regional partners to leverage the Ultium project to continue the momentum around vehicle electrification fairs well for our community’s future,” MacMillan said in the release.
KSU at Trumbull nursing professor earns award
WARREN — Gina Severino, a Kent State University at Trumbull professor and Bachelor of Science in Nursing coordinator, recently received the Ohio Nurses Association’s Excellence in Political Action Award.
Severino has been an ONA member for 36 years and joined ONA’s Health Policy Council as an alternate in 2016 before becoming a full committee member in 2019. In her role, she represents ONA District Three at numerous state and local political events. She also attends the yearly Nurses Day at the State House NDASH events.
As a professor of nursing, she teaches health care policy courses at the undergraduate BSN and the RN-BSN program level.
“I encourage our nurses and nursing students to pay attention to legislation and be willing to write letters in support of nursing issues,” Severino said in a news release. “I encourage them to take part in ONA and the American Nurses Association’s grassroots effort in support of legislation that affects nurses.”
Severino earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Kent State University in 2018 and became Kent State Trumbull’s BSN coordinator in fall 2021.
Community Legal Aid to celebrate 69th anniversary
Community Legal Aid will celebrate its 69th anniversary with a free, virtual celebration Tuesday.
Throughout its history, Legal Aid has worked to bolster the cause of justice and equity for low-income Ohioans throughout central northeast Ohio. During the virtual event, the nonprofit law firm will share how the pandemic heightened the need for services.
“Our advocates helped residents stay in their homes, get legal protection from abusers and make sure they got critical financial benefits like unemployment and economic impact payments,” Steven McGarrity, executive director of Legal Aid, said in a news release.
McGarrity credits the role others have played in the firm’s success.
“We can only celebrate these successes because of the support we received from funders, volunteers and community partners,” he said “Truly, we are celebrating the ‘community’ of Legal Aid.”
In addition to highlighting the firm’s impact during the pandemic, Legal Aid will share updates about the organization’s advocacy priorities and a look at its plans for next year.
