Mary Cosby is an original Housewife from The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City. Bravo fans know that she has had an interesting first season, and an even more dramatic second season. Her background as the First Lady of a Pentecostal church and the second wife of her step-grandfather makes her an easy target for naysayers. Her wealthy lifestyle and expensive closet are entertaining to watch, but so is her relationship with the other Housewives.
Cosby keeps her distance from the other Housewives and doesn’t seem to enjoy herself when the group of women goes out to dinner or on outings. Even more recently, Andy Cohen noted that Cosby never showed up for the filming of the season 2 reunion show. Fans have taken their views on Mary Cosby to Reddit, where the consensus is generally the same, but there are a handful of opinions that could be seen as unpopular.
The Relationship Between Meredith & Mary Is Produced
While fans loved Meredith Marks’ use of the word “engaging” and made countless RHOSLC memes about it, she’s known for something different in season 2. In the second season, Meredith has moved on from engaging with those she dislikes and has created an unlikely friendship with Mary Cosby. Fans can’t help but point out how random the friendship is, considering they didn’t have much of one in season 1. JudgmentForEveryone told Reddit, “I’m thinking Meredith is being conditioned to support Mary by producers.”
But this can be viewed as unpopular because, as seen in season 1, Meredith isn’t the kind of person to be friends with someone with a shady background just because she’s asked to.
She’s Fun To Watch Because Everyone Likes Watching A Villain
A majority of fans on Reddit dislike watching Cosby on RHOSLC because they feel like there are deeper issues that she needs to resolve off-camera. Her treatment of others and some of the outlandish things she says has a darkness that’s hard to pinpoint. Cosby’s rise as her grandmother’s former church’s First Lady is just one of her murky storylines.
But Redditor Don-Gunvalson said that they love having Cosby on their screen because who doesn’t like watching a villain? “I’m one of those people that enjoy watching bizarre people, and Mary is def [sic] bizarre,” they wrote. Others, however, think she’s even too villainous for TV.
Mary Should Come Back For A Third Season
It was rumored that Cosby was supposed to be a friend of the series in season 1, but after a Housewife fell through production promoted Mary to the full roster. After a messy season with Jen Shah, fans weren’t sure if Cosby would be back for a second season, but lo and behold she did. Now that season 2 is wrapping up, fans collectively agree that a third season wouldn’t be smart since she feuded with even more Housewives this season. In January 2022, Mary even posted a quote on Instagram about reality TV being trash.
But despite Mary’s distance around coming back for a third season, HumanRights4u hopes she does, writing, “I hope they don’t recast her.” It remains to be seen what will happen, but this opinion definitely goes against the herd.
Mary Is The Most Interesting One On The Series
Another unpopular opinion about RHOSLC’s Mary Cosby is that she has a star quality about her. Mary makes good reality TV because she’s unapologetically herself, but most feel she takes it too far. She has been shown being rude to those at her church, she’s made racist remarks on-screen, and she doesn’t get along with most of the Housewives.
But regardless of all of Cosby’s rough moments on camera, one Redditor thinks that Mary is the only “interesting” one on the series. “She’s the star of Salt Lake City. The most crazy [sic] and interesting one,” they wrote. Considering Jen Shah’s arrest, Whitney’s rebranding, Jennie’s marital issues, and Meredith and Lisa’s feud — Mary Cosby is not the only interesting one.
She Is Just Like Kathy Hilton
In the 11th season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hils, Kyle Richards’ sister, Kathy Hilton, was added to the roster as a friend of the series. Little did fans know, Hilton would go on to be one of the funniest cast members of RHOBH. She was light-hearted, silly, and endearing.
But oddly, Redditor Jaxs_Consciense felt similarly while watching Mary Cosby on RHOSLC. In an unpopular opinion, they wrote, “I think she is so d*mn funny and entertaining. She is my Kathy Hilton.” That said, they agreed that while Mary shouldn’t be on TV, they’re not ready to say “goodbye.”
Fans Take Her Too Seriously
As light-hearted and silly as reality television is, there can still be a lot of dark moments. The storylines may be overly produced, but the characters are still going through hard moments while the cameras are rolling. The internet doesn’t always help RHOSLC stars, either, because fan theories and rumors are often created and spread.
However, Yamanoken told Reddit not to take Mary so seriously. They wrote, “I like [Mary] a lot. I find her charismatic and entertaining. I don’t take her too seriously like some of y’all seem to.” Considering the claims made against Cosby are strong and the things she’s said on TV are outlandish, it’s hard for fans not to take her seriously.
People Need To Stop Accusing Her Of Things Without Proof
Throughout Mary Cosby’s time on the series, there have been stories from members of her congregation about the insulting things she has said to them, along with the mistreatment of various church members. But despite the stories and footage, Redditor SuffiecntEmployee6 is #TeamMary because they think it’s accusatory of others to claim Cosby runs a cult without proper evidence.
They wrote, “If later on this grows into a bigger story, then alright, but as of today I’m not feeling it.” This was said despite Cameron Williams coming forward on camera and telling his side of things, making this comment stand out as an outlier to most fans.
