SYCAMORE – Cancer is a life-changing disease that takes a tremendous toll on a person, both physically and emotionally. The Y and Livestrong have joined forces to create Livestrong at the YMCA, a research-based physical activity and well-being initiative designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals.

Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals. These include building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, Livestrong at the YMCA is helping people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body.

Program details:

• 12-week program with two 75-minute sessions per week

• Includes cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, balance, and flexibility exercises. Participants work at their own pace.

• Evaluation includes fitness and quality of life assessments before and after participation

• Facilitated by YMCA-certified instructors

• Requires referral and medical clearance from a physician

• During the 12 weeks, participants will receive a membership, paid by the YMCA. Thanks to generous donors, the program is 100% subsidized. There is no cost to anyone that participates.

The next session will run from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m. Tuesday and Thursdays, Feb. 15 through May 5.

If you or someone you know could benefit from participating in the program, visit www.kishymca.org or contact Kayla Heimerman, Healthy Living coordinator, at 815-756-9577 or [email protected].
